Janakpur ( proposed UNESCO World Heritage site ), In ancient times, the capital city of the Kingdom of Mithila and the centre of Maithil culture during the Treta Yug, or period, nearly 12000 years ago. The city full of lakes and temples that carries a long way history of Hinduism. This is a place where Sita was born, the wife of Lord Ram, who as per the epic Ramayana, killed Ravan, the king of the demons. This is the place where Ram married Sita. Anyone who visits Janakpur can see one of the most beautiful temple in the world of Sita which is called Janaki Temple. We can also see temple of Lord Ram and Bibah Mandap which is called as to be the place where Ram and Sita got Married.
The most important historical reference to Janakpur is in the Hindu epic Ramayana, where Lord Ram's wife Sita Devi (also called Janaki in Nepal) is said to have been the Nepali princess of Videha. Her father King Janak of Janakpur Nepal found baby Sita in a furrow of a field in visit to Siraha and raised her as his daughter. When she grew up, the king announced that she should be wed by whoever was able to string the divine bow of Shiva. Though many royal suitors tried, Son of the King Suddhodhan; Lord Ram prince of Ayodhya, alone could even lift the bow. As Ram and Sita are major figures in Hinduism, Janakpur is an important Nepalese pilgrimage site for Hindus all over the world.
In addition, both the great Nepali Gautam Buddha, founder of Buddhism, and Vardamana Mahavira, the 24th and final Tirthankara of the Jain religion, are said to have lived in Janakpur. The region was an important centre for Nepalese history of Mithila during the first millennium.
Janakpur is at a road distance of 303 kilometers from the capital of Nepal, Kathmandu and if you wish to take a flight from Kathmandu, its just a 25 minutes flight. The city lies in the Terai belt of the country where you will be able to see all the paddy fields and the dense forests before reaching the place.
Janakpur has held a special significance for Thai Royal families since ancient times. The Royal household of Thailand still receives mangoes from the orchards of Janakpur. These fruits which are in abundance only during the peak summer months from May to mid June are savored for their sweet taste and unique flavor.
