Kanchenjunga North and South Base Camp Trek - 28 days
Trekking to Kanchenjunga | Worlds' 3rd highest peak | Base Camp

Mount Kanchenjunga, Traditionally called Sinha Lila Peak, sits astride the Nepal/Sikkim border only a few miles from Tibet. You are not allowed to complete the circuit trek except for its Northern and Southern elevation. Few high passes are encountered while trailing to both the elevation in one go however during favorable weather conditions, it is quite accessible, or else, an additional of few days will be required to complete the trek via a moderate route. This route was opened to the trekkers in 1988, though people have trekked in the area in connection with mountaineering expedition since the turn of the century. The region is still restricted to organised expedition group only, special permit needed.

A journey to Kanchenjunga trekking area is a special treat- starting from the tropical lowlands through great rhododendron forests and lovely villages of eastern north Nepal up to the glacier and overwhelming views. This trekking lead to base camp of third highest peak of the world Mount Kanchenjunga which is least known among all great peaks. Exotic name such as Wedge peak, Pyramid peak, Janu Himal, White Wave, the Twins and, of course, Kanchenjunga provide the inspiration to make the challenging trek to base camp. Our approach takes us up through terraced hillsides of the remoter ethnic group of Rai and Limbu and then among well preserved forest of rhododendron, birch oak and spruce.

The trek offers you the nature in its pure form, where besides the Mount Kanchenjunga 8586 m. /28170 ft., you get to see various other fascinating mountain peaks; Mount  Yalung Kang (8505m), Dromo Peak (6100m), Yalung Ri (5200m) etc. Rich flora and fauna, and the stunningly beautiful scenarios. This region is inhabited by the friendliest people of Nepal, such as Rai and Limbu, Chhetris and Brahmins whose cultural treasures and rituals always thrill the visitors. In spite of the difference in traditions and rituals, you get to see them living in peace and harmony with other ethnic groups.

Kanchenjunga Conservation Area spread in an area of 2035 square Kilometers and KCAP area has a rich diversity of wildlife including snow leopard, Himalayan black bear, musk deer red panda and others. Pheasant, red-billed blue magpie, shy-drongo are the major birds found in Kanchenjunga trekking route. Kanchenjunga trek to the south and north faces of the world's third highest mountain offers fantastic Himalayan views, including Everest. Kanchenjunga base camp trekking provides you with an adventure trekking in eastern part of Nepal Himalaya.

We fly from Kathmandu to Biratnagar and transfer to Basantapur on the same day. The trek  follows the beautiful rhododendron forest with our first camp at Chauki then trek through Gyabla, and ascend to the higher camp at Pang Pema (5120m) and camp at Lhonak. The trek concludes at Suketar via the descent from Omje Khola, from where we fly back to Kathmandu. However the easiest and quickest possibility to reach the starting point Taplejung (Suketar) accessible by air, to capture the scenic beauty of reserved forest where almost 24 different varieties of Rhododendron flowers are found in 'Milke Danda'.

A historical and cultural site of Nepal; Kathmandu is a popular destination for tourists. It will presents a wonderful mixture of Hinduism, Tibetan Buddhism and Western influence in the Valley. Patan and Bhaktapur are its two major neighboring cities which bear immense historical, cultural and religious significance. There will be a half day guided tour to the famous and biggest Hindu shrine Pashupatinath and the largest Buddhist stupa Bouddhanath.

Day 03 - Fly to Suketar (2320 m) trek to Lali Kharka (2276 m) 3 hours.

Flight to Taplejung at Suketar Airport. Independent Himalayan Adventures crew will be waiting for your arrival. Take an early lunch, while the crew arranges all bedding and baggages. An easy 2 to 3 hours walk along the ridge line to Lali Kharka, a grazing area.

Day 04 - Trek to Khesewa (2120 meters) 5 hours.

After traversing the hillside a short way, we descend to the village of Pakora along the Phawa Khola, crossing a suspension bridge before beginning the steep climb up towards Kunjuri. Lunch will be taken somewhere below Kunjuri and the afternoon's walk takes on a short distance over the crest of the ridge to our campsite at Khesewa. We get our first views of Kanchenjunga, and should be able to clearly make out the south and main summit along with Yalung Kang. Overnight at tented camp.

Day 05 - Trek to Mamankhe (1920 meters) 5 hours.

Today the path covers steep hillside through terraced fields high above the Kabbeli Khola. There are some ups and downs crossing side valleys but there are many shady spots to rest. After lunch at one of these we pass the village of Anpan, before descending to cross the Kashawa Khola and then, finally, we walk up again through terraced fields to the village of Mamankhe. Overnight at tented camp.

Day 06 - Trek to Yamphudin (2080 meters) 6 hours.

Today the walk starts with an easy climb to Yamphudin along a track which contours the hillside above the Kabeli Khola. The path has several ups and downs as we cross the ridges and stream beds that make up the valley sides. Generally the route is flat and the river eventually becomes level with the trail a couple of hours before Yamphudin. At last we can stop to lunch in one of the clear beautiful river. It is truly an idyllic spot. After lunch by the river we complete the day's walk to Yamphudin. Yamphudin is the most remote settlement in this area and the last village we will see until we reach Ghunsa. It is a charming place tucked away beneath the ridge of Deurali Danda that we must cross next.

Day 07 - Trek to Lamite jungle camp (2920 meters)

Beyond Yamphudin, the trail ascends a steep spur before dropping again to cross the Omje Khola. Walking through beautiful and dense forest, we stop for lunch in a meadow atop this spur which commands fine views of the valley beyond Yamphudin to the south and of the Omje Khola Valley and Deorali Danda to the north. A steep descent to the river brings us to our campsite in a clearing in the Lamite forest.

Day 08 - Trek to Torontan (3080 meters)

From our campsite we ascend steeply for 3 hours through dense forest to the crest of the Deorali Danda. From the top, Mt Jannu is clearly visible and definitely closer! After crossing the pass, we descend across some fairly steep and exposed scree slopes before re-entering the forest, where we will stop for lunch. After lunch, a steep descent takes us down into the valley of the Simbua Khola and after crossing the 'interesting' wooden bridge, we arrive at Torontan. This campsite lies amongst the towering fir trees of what is now a mainly coniferous alpine forest. [walk approx 6 - 7 hours]

Day 09 - Trek to Tseram (3870 meters) 6 hours.

Today we follow the river through more beautiful forest, the conifers giving way to the rhododendron forest. The valley climbs fairly steeply and as the day progresses the trees become more stunted and scattered, giving us glimpses of the snow-capped giants ahead and the massive snout of Yalung Glacier. Just before Tseram the towering heights of Kabru and Rathong peak start to peep over the moraine. Camping at Tseram, a grazing area, the night temperatures will remind us that we are really gaining height. Overnight at tented camp.

Day 10 - Trek to Ramche (4580 meters) 4 hours.

A short day walk up the final 600 meters to Ramche where the trail to Kanchenjunga South turns dangerously. The scenery is magnificent as we ascend past snout of the Yalung Glaciers into a series of ablation valleys which gives easy walking and good camping. A frozen lake, clear streams and views of Koktang, Rathong and Kabru are the highlights of this stroll. Expect to feel the altitude today.

Day 11 - Explore around Ramche (4580 meters) and Oktang (4730 meters) 5 hours.

Our first close encounter with Kanchenjunga. Following the valley round to see the stunning south face of Kanchenjunga and Jannu. We get across the Yalung Ri Glacier and continue by a sweeping curve, at Oktang, 4730 meters, we are suddenly confronted with the southern wall of the mountain. This vast ridge forms a cirque over 15 kms long, nowhere less than 7500 meters high and with three main summits of Kanchenjunga at 8420 meters, 8586 meters, and 8474 meters! It is a breathtaking mountain panorama and especially impressive is Jannu while observing the glaciers flowing from its east face.

Day 12 - Trekking beyond the Mirgin La- 7 hrs

Leaving our campsite, we trek down the valley, passing the small settlement of Lapsang, before turning off towards the Mirgin La - the pass we must cross in order to reach Gunsa and the north side of Kanchenjunga. As we descend from the Mirgin La, the views, in particular of Mt Jannu, are simply magnificent. Our campsite will be somewhere beyond the pass.

Day 15 - Trek to Ghunsa (3475 meters) 5 hours.

Although there four more passes, there is little descent between them, so in effect it is a high scenic area. After lunch descent brings us to Lamba Sumba Kharka where there are more views of the awesome Southwest Face of Jannu. From Kharka the going is easy again down a pleasant forested trail to the village of Ghunsa, where we camp in the village. Ghunsa is a picturesque Tibetan village; prayer flags flutter from the wooden houses and there are two monasteries, a welcome sight after the many days of wilderness. One of the local specialties is 'Tongba', a curious alcoholic drink. A jug or large bamboo cup is filled with fermented millet seed and boiling water pored over. The flavor and alcohol seep though and you drink it with a special straw. You might need a drink after the tough 4 to 6 hour walk.

Day 16 - Trek to Khambachen (4040 meters) 6 hours.

Gradually the trail ascends to south of the Ghunsa Khola and crossing flood plains while emerging on a pasture situated at the north side of the river. A steep climb to a slope from where it crosses a slide and then descends to Lakepo. A short climb from here to the village of Khambachen 4040 meters.

Day 17 - Trek to Lhonak (4790 meters) 6 hrs.

The trek up to Lhonak via Ramtang village is not too strenuous and despite the increase in altitude we are able to trek along easily, enjoying the breathtaking views of the valley and mountain peaks. Our lunch stop is at Ramtang, from where the incredible fluted summit of Wedge Peak first becomes visible and during the afternoon Nepal Peak, the Twins, Mera and the White Wave all come into view. The campsite at Lhonak is on a grassy plain perched high above the Kanchenjunga Glacier opposite Wedge Peak.

Day 18 - Trek to Pang Pema (5140 meters) 4 hrs

A leisurely 3 hour walk from Lhonak takes us up to Pang Pema. The trail follows the moraine before finally reaching Pang Pema, the North Face Base Camp, which is in a sheltered spot directly opposite the towering north face of Kanchenjunga. This is one of the most spectacular campsites in the world and is a fitting climax to this unique trek.

Day 19 - Explore around Kanchenjunga Base Camp (5100 meters) and down steps to Khambachen 5 hours.

Today those who would like to take a morning hike up a ridge, north of Pangpema. A climb of 200 or 300 meters and provides a great vantage point with views of Kanchenjunga, Wedge Peak, the Twins and Tent Peak. As usual the descent goes faster and you can reach Khambachen the same day.

Day 20 - Trek to Ghunsa 6 hours.

More descents thru magnificent sections of forest as long as we make Amjillassa tomorrow it doesn't matter where we stay. From Ghunsa an hour down we pass through Phole, a village in two parts. The upper sections house Tibetan refugees who are well established, the second is the winter village of Ghunsa. Further down is Yangswa, a great and warm camp.

Day 21 - Trek to Kyapra (2300 meters) around 5 hrs

From Gunsa, our route out of the mountains follows the beautiful Gunsa and Tamur Kholas and is through spectacular forests of rhododendron, conifer, birch and oak. The valley sides here are steep and the trail follows the river as it cascades downwards. We pass through Kyapra, the last of the Tibetan villages, and, an hour or so further on, we camp in the forest at a spot called Tang.

Day 22 - Trek to Syakathum (1600 meters) 5 hrs.

Heading for the village of Syakathum, our route follows an undulating trail for the first couple of hours until we reach Amjilasa. From here, there is a long steep descent from which we can see the Gunsa Khola Valley stretched out before us. We camp in the fields of Syakathum.

Day 23 - Trek to Chirwa (1180 meters) 5 hrs.

Leaving Sakathum, we head to Chirwa. En route we meet the confluence of two rivers, Simbua Khola and Gunsa Khola. At this point we get to witness the most magnificent view of two river uniting into Tamur Kosi. On following the trail along Tamur khola, many other small tributary streams come our way. After trekking for about 4-5 hours we enter into pristine village of Chirwa.

Day 24 - Trek to Phurumba- 4 hrs.

The route further leads to cultivated land and rich pastures. On reaching Mitlung, we halt for a healthy lunch. Then our trail zigzags through the path of steep stones. After climbing for about 4 hours we come to the valley of Phurumba. We camp at Phurumba for the night.

Day 25 - Trek to Taplejung - Suketar (2300 meters)- 5 hrs

As we leave the valley, we continue ascending along the ridge for about 3 hours to Taplejung village. We can wander around the village getting familiar with village life, cultural richness, custom and village people. Thereafter, after leisurely ascents for about 2 hour, we finally reach the airstrip at Suketar where we conclude the rip of the day.

Day 26 - Fly back to Kathmandu.
